Environmentally Friendly Products

We are committed to controlling six hazardous and prohibited materials and to the application of green procurement to develop products that are friendly to the environment.

Response to six hazardous and prohibited materials

Countries around the world are aiming to minimize use of the following six materials, which cause severe environmental impact, in their products.

<Materials>

  • Cadmium
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Hexavalent Chromium
  • PBB (Polybrominated biphenyl)
  • PBDE (Polybrominated diphenyl ether)

RoHS Directive is a major example.

RoHS Directive

(2002/95/EC Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment)

This directive has been enforced since July 1, 2006.

It limits the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chrome (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) by restricting the concentration (w%) in parts made of homogeneous material. If no alternative material can be substituted for technical reasons, there are provisions to allow an exclusion. Restriction values of chemical compounds in heavy metal, which are subject to the regulation, are determined by converted concentration into metal.

Homogeneous Material

This term refers to a material that cannot be mechanically separated into different materials.

The term "homogeneous" is understood as "a material made of thoroughly uniform composition". So mechanical disassembly means basically removing screws or bolts, cutting off, collapsing, breaking into shards, grinding and disassembling through mechanical process, such as abrasive machining.

Examples of "homogeneous material" are metals, alloys, glass, ceramics, resin, plastics, coating agent for the parts subject to RoHS.

For electronic parts (ex. IC), lead substrate, (upper and lower) plating, packages, paper, board, resins, and paintings, and occasionally even markings are subject to being composed of thoroughly uniform composition. The mass of the part becomes the denominator of the calculation for contained concentration (w%). Generally, one should consider it as a choice to be able to change designs of materials and parts on specifications and drawing directions.
